Those thinking Birmingham doesn’t have a serious cocktail scene need to go and wash their brains out, with 18/81 proving quite the opposite.
The bar itself highlights the fact that Birmingham’s cocktail scene is moving up and we’d say 18/81 is leading the pack.
If you live in Birmingham or frequent the city and haven’t heard of the bar, don’t worry you may not be the only one as 18/81 doesn’t shout about its location and instead prefers to remain somewhat anonymous.
It is styled like a speakeasy from the outside in the sense you have to ring a doorbell to be let in. Whether or not that’s your sort of thing shouldn’t matter as the cocktails inside are worth whatever theatre you have to endure prior.
Drinks styling ranges from the classy classics to the twists on popular culture, including the use of brand name products as vessels.
When there is a bit of playfulness in the cocktail’s styling, it’s not tacky or twee, but simple and almost sophisticated, which is good because that sort of thing, in our opinion, is going to far.
That’s not to say we don’t like a disco cocktail, but there is a time and a place.
